- Background
The Ghana EXIM Bank in conjunction with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) and the National Entrepreneurship & Innovation Programme (NEIP) have initiated the Youth in Greenhouse Enterprise Project (YuGEP).
The project is an Initiative to promote investment in greenhouse vegetable production in Ghana towards import substitution and employment creation.
Project Description
1. Establishment of 100 greenhouses in selected regions of Ghana
2. The project is intended to provide both financial and technical assistance to 100 entrepreneurs; i.e.:
• Senior high graduates
• Tertiary graduates
• Youth engaged in agriculture
• Passionate of vegetable farming
3. Each beneficiary would be provided with the following;
A fully equipped Greenhouse structure
Borehole and water storage facility. This will be co shared.
Growing medium and certified seeds
Irrigation facility
Small farm tools/equipment
4. Selected beneficiaries would be offered medium term loans from the Bank to be repaid with sales proceeds. All sales will be done by the consultant and repayments deducted at source.
Project Objectives
Reduce the persistent importation of vegetables
Reduce food inflation during the dry season in Ghana
Increase production and yield of vegetable output in Ghana
Provide research and scientific learning resource to schools (senior high and tertiary institutions) in Ghana.
Create viable jobs for the youth in Urban and peri-urban Ghana through sustainable agricultural ventures. 100 greenhouses will create 400 direct jobs and 300 indirect jobs
Stimulate medium scale agro-processing of vegetables
Make agribusiness attractive to the youth especially Tertiary Graduates
Promote consumption of locally produced vegetables
Project duration
The duration of the project would be three (3) years covering 2020 and ending 2023.
Evaluation of the Project
By the year 2023, it is expected that 100 greenhouses would been added to the existing ones totaling 200, contributing significantly to the reduction of vegetable import and stabilize food inflation during the dry season.
Eligibility Criteria
Ghana EXIM Bank is in a position to consider proposals from prospective applicants from the regions under consideration. Only applicants who meet the following criteria shall be considered:
1. Beneficiary should have interest in vegetable farming
2. Beneficiary could be a graduate of a recognized senior high or tertiary institution and engaged in agriculture
3. Must be a Ghanaian between 20 and 45 years of age
4. Applicant must demonstrate issues of social inclusion and environmental sustainability in their business plan or at the interview
5. Must demonstrate readiness to recruit at least two people with Agric, marketing or Accounting background to assist in managing the business.
6. A degree or certificate in Agriculture will be an added advantage.
7. Interested applicants shall submit a formal application letter to the Bank
